READ:

A young man approached Jesus and said, “Teacher, what good must I do to gain eternal life?” He answered him, “Why do you ask me about the good? There is only One who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” He asked him, “Which ones?” And Jesus replied, “You shall not kill;you shall not commit adultery;you shall not steal;you shall not bear false witness;honor your father and your mother;and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The young man said to him, “All of these I have observed. What do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” When the young man heard this statement, he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

REFLECT:

If we want to wholeheartedly follow Christ we must let go of everything we have in this world. While we must keep the commandments we must also do good works in order to fully come into communion with Christ. The less we are attached to, the more easily we can follow Him with totality of heart. While we must detach ourselves from material comforts, we must also be able to let go of relationships with others that may lead us away from putting Christ at the center of our lives.

It is tempting to believe that total and complete detachment can occur all at once. In reality we are finite beings that will fail. Do not become discouraged in your efforts to detach yourself from the world. Remember that Christ is with you even in your failings.

RESPOND:

Reflect on a time you completed an exceedingly hard or seemingly impossible task. How did you get through it? Where was God in this? Ask the Lord to give you the graces of faith and patience in your mission of detachment.
