The Month of June gives us an opportunity to draw close to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Most Chaste Heart of Saint Joseph.  By living the spirituality of the Three Hearts, we can enrich our life with the fullness of God’s healing love.

The Three Hearts

The Most Chaste Heart of Joseph lead the Holy Family in their vocation.  Joseph needed to model all the virtues: especially faith, hope, love, prudence, justice, temperance, and fortitude.  He had to lead the Holy Family through an exodus to Egypt, through difficulties and joys, all the way through the end of his life when he died the most beautiful death in the arms of Mary and Jesus.

Secondly, the Immaculate Heart of Mary supplied a temple for Jesus, the new Ark of the Covenant, containing the Holy of Holies.  Jesus lived in Mary for nine months after his conception and then lived under her and Joseph’s protection and care for thirty years before inaugurating His mission by being baptized by St. John the Baptist in the Jordan River.  Jesus was and is more glorified in and through Mary than through all the rest of creation!

Finally, the Most Sorrowful and Sacred Heart of Jesus triumphed in the mission His Father gave Him to save all of humanity through His Paschal Mystery: His Passion, Death, Resurrection, and Ascension.  This triumph was through the Holy Family, the communion of persons that sheltered Him until His hour had come. The Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Most Chaste Heart of Saint Joseph share in this victory over sin and death.

By placing ourselves under the protection of all Three Hearts, we can attain the same victory as the Holy Family in our daily lives. One very tangible way we can place ourselves under the protection of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph are through acts of consecration. The Church, through the wisdom of many saints, offers many resources to help us do this!

Consecration Resources

  • For consecration to Mary, I recommend the consecration of Saint Louis Marie de Montfort. The consecration can be found here
  • For consecration to Saint Joseph, I recommend Father Donald Calloway’s excellent book on consecration to our spiritual father Saint Joseph. Information on and an option to purchase the book can be found here
  • For consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, there is this beautiful prayer from Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque. The consecration can be found here.

This coming Friday, we celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In this month of the sacred heart, we invited to draw closer to this Heart and by doing so grow closer to the Hearts of Mary and Joseph who were intimately connected with Him in His Earthly life and now in eternity.
